Tribute

Linda Carol Lyon, 65, died peacefully on June 19, 2020, at the Manor at Bluewater Bay in Niceville, FL. She was the adoring widow of Richard Lyon (deceased), devoted and loving daughter of Jean and Robert Mathers (both deceased), cherished sister of David Barrie Mathers (and sister-in-law Melissa Mathers) of West Monroe, LA and Barbara Ann Mathers of Tewksbury, MA, loving aunt of Victoria Leigh Rogers and Brian David Mathers, and loving cousin of Anne Petrovich and Larry Mathers. She also leaves behind countless friends across the greater Niceville area. As it was often said about Linda, she couldn’t go into any store, restaurant, or church without running into a friend. She was truly loved by many and before she passed was emphatic about wanting to make sure all her friends knew how deeply she appreciated and loved them.

Linda was born in Swindon, England into a family with a career Air Force meteorologist (Colonel Robert Mathers) and his wife Jean and they lived in various places around the world while she grew up. She graduated high school in Belleville, Illinois and eventually settled in Niceville, FL where she married her best friend Richard Lyon, also of Niceville. Linda loved music and singing, had a beautiful voice, and was an active member of the Crosspoint choir for 29 years. She delighted in children and volunteered in the church nursery and at Vacation Bible School as often as she could. Linda loved to draw and had an affinity for butterflies, wolves, and birds, especially cardinals and mourning doves. Linda had a quick wit, loved to laugh, was a genuinely loyal friend and family member, enjoyed John Wayne movies (“There you go again!”), and loved playing games and being with her church friends. Linda had a beautiful and trusting love for Jesus and her deep faith was a true testament to those who knew her. She would often say “I'm just taking it a day at a time and leaving it in God's hands!” Linda’s favorite Bible verses were Matthew 19:26 and Psalm 23.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude for all the loving and compassionate care Linda received in the last few years of her life from the medical team at Eglin hospital, the staff at Bob Hope Village, the staff at the BeeHive Homes of Niceville, the Manor at Bluewater Bay, and the wonderful people, especially the choir, at Crosspoint Church in Niceville.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Linda’s name to the Benevolence Ministry of Crosspoint Church, 214 Partin Drive South, Niceville, FL 32578. In light of Covid-19, the family will be planning a memorial service at a later date. Linda’s final resting place will be Barrancas Cemetery in Pensacola, FL.
