Herbert “Herb” Latham Carter, 98, passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at University Hospital in Augusta, GA. 

Mr. Carter is survived by his daughter, Laurie C. Hamlett (Steve), grandchild Maeghan Iddings and great grandchildren Avery and Reece. Daughter, Diane Lauterbach, grandchildren Zachary Sadler, Mallory Sadler and great grandchildren Riley, Finn and Fischer.

Herb, the son of Herbert C. and Minnie B. Carter, was born June 30, 1918 in Tiptonville, TN. After graduating high school, he worked for the Army Corps of Engineers. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 excelling in aircraft maintenance/quality assurance as a Master Sergeant and Chief Inspector working on OV-1, B-24, B-29, B-36 and B-52 aircraft. Herb was a decorated veteran of World War II (Pacific) and the Korean War. Herb served the majority of his 20 year military career at Eglin Air Force Base. His pride, patriotism and discipline gained from the Air Force never left him.

Herb spent most of his life in the Valparaiso/Niceville area with his loving wife and local school teacher, Dorothy (Dot) Tate Carter who left us too early in 1983. Herb was a member of Okaloosa Mason Lodge #312 and the Fort Walton Beach Shrine Club. Herb was a master of many trades: biblical historian, mechanic, carpenter, jewelers, horseman, fisherman, farmer and even a ballroom dancer. In 2010, at the age of 90 he relocated to North Augusta, SC to be near his daughter Laurie and her family.

A viewing and family visitation will be held 1:00 Sunday, February 26, 2017 at McLaughlin Twin Cities Funeral Home in Niceville FL, with a 3:00 graveside ceremony following at Sunset Cemetery in Valparaiso, FL.
